New building at the Ilmenau site

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has been expanding its Ilmenau research site in the "Am Vogelherd" industrial park since summer 2016. The Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation IOSB, Institute Division Applied Systems Technology AST and the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, Department Electronic Measurement and Signal Processing EMS are erecting a joint institute building. The result will be an openly designed building that blends unobtrusively into its surroundings and presents the urban area in an inviting way to residents and guests from business, tourism and politics.

The new building will intensify the cooperation between the two research institutes and allow for joint developments that will open up new markets and enable special unique selling points in the network. A total of 3,400 square meters of offices, laboratories and training rooms will be created on four levels, providing space for up to 212 employees. The site, with a total area of 18,000 square meters, will also allow the building to be extended if necessary.

The estimated construction costs are €25 million, of which 40% (€10 million) will be covered by the European Regional Development Fund ERDF 2014 - 2020, 30% (€7.5 million) by the Free State of Thuringia from the Operational Program "Investments in Growth and Employment Thuringia", and 30% (€7.5 million) by basic funding from the federal government.
