The data room for the energy sector based on Gaia-X

The project

The energy data-X project is funded by the German government to establish a shared data space for the German energy sector. The aim is to seamlessly interconnect the electricity, transport and heating sectors digitally and to improve the integration of renewable energies. The project is a GAIA-X beacon project and is intended to enable innovative digital business models for all market participants. The consortium comprises partners from the energy sector, the IT industry and the academic community. The project contributes to national and European energy and climate protection policy and is funded by the BMWK over a three-year period as part of the 7th Energy Research Programme.  

Energy data-X is aimed at stakeholders in the energy industry and facilitates the development of data-driven innovations in the energy sector. The data ecosystem connects across sectors with other data spaces such as Catena-X (BMWK-funded data ecosystems in the automotive sector).

The Gaia-X initiative serves as a key foundation for energy data-X. Unlike centralised data storage, the data remains with the owner. The data room’s services are federated (decentralised) and are provided jointly by many stakeholders. An identity and trust mechanism ensures that the stakeholders in the data ecosystem are known and trustworthy.& Access to the data room is via a connector that uses secure data connections to ensure that only the agreed data is exchanged between the parties involved. This guarantees data sovereignty.

Our solutions

The energy data-X consortium is demonstrating, through two forward-looking use cases, the potential added value that a data room can offer the energy sector. In the first use case, the integration of smart meter gateways (SMGWs) enables the optimisation of grid operations. Deviations between planned and actual feed-in and withdrawal of renewable energy are detected in real time, allowing the need for balancing measures to be assessed. In today’s clearing process, it can take several weeks before such deviations can be attributed to the relevant parties.

The second use case aims to enable the balancing of energy generation and consumption through the use of decentralised flexibility sources. As conventional power stations are replaced by decentralised renewable energy systems, the development of flexible feed-in sources and consumers is becoming increasingly important. By integrating small, decentralised systems such as charging stations, electric vehicle battery storage and heat pumps into the data space, their flexibility potential can be harnessed to stabilise the energy system.
